The General Healthcare System (GeSY) gives every Cyprus resident access to physiotherapy services at minimal cost. Yet many patients are unsure of the process, what is covered, and what their rights are. This guide explains step by step how to access physiotherapy through GeSY.
What is GeSY?
GeSY (General Healthcare System) is the national health system of Cyprus, operational since June 2019. It covers all eligible residents and provides access to a wide range of healthcare services, including physiotherapy. Beneficiaries pay a small copayment per visit, while the remaining cost is covered by the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO).
How to book physiotherapy through GeSY
Step 1: Visit your personal GeSY doctor and request a referral for physiotherapy. Your doctor will assess your condition and issue an electronic referral. Step 2: With your referral, contact a registered physiotherapy provider such as RE-FYZIO. Step 3: Book your appointment and begin treatment. Your copayment is €10 per session. You do not need to pay anything additional — the remainder is covered directly by GeSY.
Cost and number of sessions
Through GeSY, each beneficiary is entitled to up to 12 physiotherapy sessions per referral. The copayment is fixed at €10 per session. If more sessions are needed, your therapist can request an extension through the HIO. Alternatively, you can continue privately without a referral. At RE-FYZIO, we accept both GeSY patients and private appointments.
What to expect at your first visit
At your first visit, the physiotherapist will carry out a comprehensive assessment: detailed history, clinical examination, and functional tests. Based on the findings, an individualized treatment plan is designed. At RE-FYZIO, every session is one-on-one — we do not do group treatments. Spiros Efstathiou dedicates full attention to each patient, focusing on the root cause, not just the symptom.
